7 Signs Your Fuse Board Needs Upgrading

Most people never think about their fuse board until something goes wrong, and by then it can be an emergency at the worst possible time. The board is the single most important safety device in your home, and older ones simply do not offer the protection modern standards require. Here are the seven signs we look for that tell us a consumer unit is overdue for an upgrade, and what a proper upgrade actually involves.

1. It still uses rewireable fuses

If your board has little ceramic or plastic fuse holders with fuse wire inside rather than switches that click, it is decades behind current standards. Rewireable fuses are slow to react, can be replaced with the wrong rating of wire, and offer none of the fast fault protection a modern board does. This alone is a strong reason to upgrade.

2. There is no RCD or RCBO protection

An RCD, or the individual RCBO version, cuts the power in a fraction of a second when it detects electricity flowing where it should not, for example through a person. Boards without this protection leave you exposed to electric shock in exactly the situations that matter most, like a cut cable in the garden or a faulty appliance. Modern boards protect every circuit this way.

3. Scorch marks, heat or discolouration

Browning around a fuse or breaker, a board that feels warm, or a faint smell of hot plastic all point to connections that are breaking down and overheating. This is one to act on quickly, because loose or hot connections are a genuine fire risk.

4. Breakers that trip for no clear reason

The occasional trip from a faulty kettle is normal. Breakers that trip regularly, or that will not reset, are telling you a circuit is overloaded, damaged, or that the board itself is struggling. It is a symptom worth investigating, not living with.

5. Buzzing, crackling or humming

A healthy board is silent. Any buzzing or crackling means electricity is arcing across a poor connection, which generates heat and is a serious warning sign. If your board makes noise, switch off what you safely can and get it looked at.

6. The board is full, with no spare ways

If every slot is used, there is no room to add a circuit safely, which becomes a problem the moment you want a garden room, a hot tub, an EV charger or an extension. A full board usually needs replacing to gain capacity, so it is worth doing as part of any bigger project.

7. A house full of extension leads

Relying on adapters and extension leads in every room is often a sign the installation behind them is undersized or the board has run out of usable circuits. The trailing leads are the visible symptom, the real issue is behind the wall.

What a proper upgrade involves

A modern consumer unit upgrade is more than swapping a box. Done properly it includes:

• Individual RCBO protection : every circuit protected on its own, so one fault never blacks out the whole house.

• Surge protection (SPD) : built into the board to shield appliances, electronics and smart home kit from spikes.

• Earthing and bonding checks : main earth, meter tails and bonding to gas and water brought up to standard.

• Full testing and certification : every circuit tested, labelled, and an Electrical Installation Certificate provided.

What an upgrade is not

An upgrade is not a fix for dangerous wiring elsewhere in the house.
